Mining Domain Safety Expert – Chile
Job Description – Mining Domain Safety Expert (Chile)
Role Objective
The Mining Domain Safety Expert is responsible for leading, advising, and strengthening Health, Safety, and Occupational Risk Management across mining operations in Chile. The role ensures regulatory compliance, risk control excellence, and a proactive safety culture aligned with global mining best practices.
Key Responsibilities
Regulatory & Compliance
- Ensure full compliance with Chilean mining safety regulations (SERNAGEOMIN, DS 132, Law 16.744, DS 40, DS 44).
- Act as the technical authority on mining safety for audits, inspections, and regulatory engagements.
- Support permitting, operational readiness, and contractor compliance processes.
Operational Safety Leadership- Lead the implementation and monitoring of Critical Risk Management (CRM) frameworks.
- Develop and review IPER matrices, Bow‑Tie analysis, and fatal risk controls.
- Oversee safety performance across mining operations (open pit, underground, processing plants, maintenance).
Incident Prevention & Investigation- Lead serious incident and high‑potential event investigations (ICAM, TapRooT, or equivalent).
- Drive corrective actions and systemic improvements.
- Analyze safety KPIs, trends, and leading indicators.
Culture, Training & Capability Building- Promote a strong safety culture through leadership engagement and field presence.
- Design and deliver safety training for operational teams and contractors.
- Coach site leadership on visible safety leadership and decision‑making.
Stakeholder & Client Interface- Act as a trusted safety advisor to site leadership and corporate teams.
- Interface with clients, regulators, and external auditors.
- Support contractor onboarding and safety governance.
Required QualificationsEducation & Certification- Engineering degree (Mining, Industrial, Mechanical, or equivalent).
- Certified Mining Safety Expert – SERNAGEOMIN (Category A or B).
- Postgraduate qualification in Occupational Safety, Risk Management, or HSE (preferred).
Experience- 10+ years in mining safety roles within Chilean mining operations.
- Proven experience in large‑scale mining environments
- Strong exposure to contractor‑heavy operations.
Technical Knowledge- Critical risk controls (fatal risk management).
- ISO 45001 / ISO 14001 / ISO 31000.
- Emergency management and crisis response.
- Mining processes (drilling, blasting, hauling, processing).
Soft Skills- Strong leadership presence and credibility with senior stakeholders.
- Clear communication with executives and frontline teams.
- Ability to operate independently in complex, high‑risk environments.
Key Success Metrics- Reduction in high‑potential incidents and fatal risks.
- Regulatory compliance with zero critical findings.
- Improved safety culture indicators and proactive reporting.
- Strong client and regulator confidence.
