Principal Business Consultant – Mining Safety & Risk
Overview
The Senior Business Consultant – Mining Safety & Risk advises mining clients across Chile on safety, operational risk, and regulatory compliance transformation. The role partners with executive and operational leaders to embed critical risk management, strengthen governance, and improve safety performance as part of broader business and ESG objectives.
Key Responsibilities- Lead client-facing consulting engagements focused on mining safety and operational risk
- Design and implement safety and risk operating models aligned with global mining best practices
- Advise on Chilean mining regulations (SERNAGEOMIN, DS 132, Law 16.744, DS 40, DS 44)
- Support audits, inspections, permitting, and operational readiness activities
- Lead Critical Risk Management (CRM), including fatal risk controls, IPER matrices, and Bow Tie analysis
- Analyze safety KPIs, trends, and leading indicators to drive performance improvement
- Review and lead serious incident and high potential event investigations (ICAM, TapRooT, or equivalent)
- Act as a trusted advisor to C-suite, executives, and site leadership
- Advise on safety culture transformation and leadership capability building
- Interface with regulators, external auditors, and key stakeholders
- Support business development, proposals, and RFP responses
- Lead business consulting engagements and related business development activities, ensuring high‑quality delivery within agreed timelines and budgets.
- Drive client identification and opportunity development, lead proposal and presentation efforts, oversee consulting engagements from initiation to successful closure, and contribute to practice and enterprise initiatives to support operational effectiveness.
Required Qualifications- Engineering Degree (Mining, Industrial, Mechanical, Safety or equivalent)
- Certified Mining Safety Expert – SERNAGEOMIN (Category A or B)
- 10+ years of experience in mining safety, operational risk, or mining operations in Chile
- Experience in large-scale mining operations with contractor-heavy environments
- Knowledge of Critical Risk Management and fatal risk controls
- Familiarity with ISO 45001, ISO 14001, ISO 31000
- Strong understanding of mining processes (open pit, underground, processing, maintenance).
- This role entails significant travel—up to 75%—to support mining operations and client engagements both locally and internationally.
Preferred Qualifications- Prior experience in consulting, advisory, or corporate/regional mining roles
- Postgraduate qualification in Occupational Safety, Risk Management, or HSE
- Masters Degree, in Business Administration or similar
- Experience supporting regulatory audits and executive-level engagements
- Strong stakeholder management and executive communication skills
